If you’ve never been to Rhode Island, let us be the first to encourage you to visit. Simply put, Rhode Island is unforgettable. Often nicknamed “America’s First Resort” tiny Rhode Island is much more. Its climate is tempered by the Atlantic Ocean, and there are miles upon miles of breathtaking beaches (and views) to savor and enjoy.

Further inland, Rhode Island offers the cosmopolitan and historic city of Providence and a surprising array of agricultural activity, punctuated by a small but thriving wine industry. If this surprises you, you’re not alone … we were surprised as well! But grapes grow in plentiful numbers here, and winemakers have adapted their art in accordance with what nature provides.

There are five wineries in Rhode Island, making this is a perfect weekend wine travel destination. Interestingly, Rhode Island’s climate is very similar to the north of France, which is famous for its wine production. Since Providence is our starting point, let’s learn a bit more about this charming and vibrant city adjacent to Narragansett Bay.

Exploring Providence

We were delighted to discover that Providence, the capitol of Rhode Island with a population of 175,000, is a very walkable city. What better way to explore a city than to feel its pulse on foot? Among Providence’s neighborhood destinations are Wayland Square, Federal Hill, and of course the downtown area.

Federal Hill, long known for its “Little Italy” area, teems with dining opportunities. If you’re a fan of independent stores and shops, don’t miss Wayland Square on the city’s east side. And let’s not forget downtown Providence, a destination for dining, nightlife, and historic architecture.

Exploring Rhode Island Wine

Since Rhode Island is such a small state, one could quite possibly visit all five wineries in two days. However, you’d miss the simple pleasure of discovering all that Rhode Island has to offer. We were struck how lush, green, and rural the area became as we traveled outside of Providence.

Just a few minutes from the Massachusetts border is the small town of Cumberland, home of Diamond Hill Vineyards. Located on a 34 acre site, it’s so picturesque here that weddings and special events are common in front of the 220 year old vineyard house. Known for its Pinot Noir grapes, Diamond Hill also has an excellent reputation for fruit wines.

South of Providence in Newport County, you’ll find three wineries: Greenvale Vineyards, Newport Vineyards and Winery, and Sakonnet Vineyards. Each location is a scenic gem! In addition to the gorgeous scenery, each winery hosts numerous seasonal events, perfect for relaxing and enjoying crisp, delightful Rhode Island vintages.

Leaving the Newport area and heading toward Rhode Island’s southwestern coastal area, you’ll find Langworthy Farm Winery in Westerly, just a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean. Langworthy is situated on a family farm with an 1875 Victorian farmhouse that welcomes overnight guests. The grounds feature a stunning Norway maple tree that is reportedly the largest of its kind in the state

You’ll find wine for any palate at these charming Rhode Island wineries, from deep complex reds to light and crisp Rieslings. So, here’s to little Rhode Island … small in size but very very big in wine, taste, and scenery! Once you visit, you’ll never forget. Cheers!

Nature favored Marin County with nature’s best as it is found in the northwestern part of California and had been topographically formed as a peninsula that faces southward to look over the majestic Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay. Marin County’s other neighbors are Sonoma and Napa Counties to its north, the Pacific Ocean and its beaches to its west, and the San Pablo Bay to its east. Nature did in fact favor Marin County with nature’s best.

Because Marin County is sandwiched between two prominent bodies of water and as a result of its winter’s rains, it has been proven time and time again to have warmer winters than its immediate neighbors. For just those exact reasons, Marin County was equally blessed with cooler summers which never trigger heat waves, especially near its beaches.

The latest census of the United States Census Bureau estimates Marin County’s total area at 828 square miles; 520 square miles of which are dry lands and the remaining 308 square miles are water. Mother-Nature bless Marin County with breathtaking landscapes of fertile green pasturelands, tidal flats at its shores and the majestic Mount Tamalpais which is Marin County’s tallest mountain reaching 2,600 feet up to its crystal blue skies.

Marin County has also been blessed (or cursed) by the ever threatening infamous San Andreas earthquake fault that runs right through it and is in an unyielding effort ripping the Tomales Peninsula away from its mainland bit by endless bit.

Nature has also favored Marin County with an extraordinarily power force, the San Andreas earthquake fault, that is both a blessing and a threat. The threat lies in the fact that it is continually disconnecting the Tomale Peninsula from its mainland in addition to the ever-looming earthquakes. The blessing lies in the fact that it is the San Andreas earthquake fault that created Marin County’s spectacular topography and, as a bonus, deposited an assortment of richly prolific soils.

Because Mother-Nature has blessed Marin County so generously, man has been returning the favor by setting up formally protected areas:

- Located in the San Marino Bay, the Marin Island National Wildlife Refuge spans over two islands, the East Marin and the West Marin, and it was established to primarily shelter the largest heron and egret population of the region. This refuge is also a permanent home to many other species of fowl as well as feeding grounds for migratory birds.

- Point Reyes National Seashore is a preserve to over 1,000 species of plants and animals in a breathtaking setting of crashing ocean waves against rugged headlands and gentle beaches, wide open grasslands, rolling hills and wooded crests.

- Muir Woods National Monument is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), one of the largest urban national parks in the world. GGNRA was established in 1972 and contains 75,398 acres extend from Tomales Bay in Marin County to San Mateo County in the south, encompassing 59 miles of shoreline – one of the nation’s largest coastal preserves.

The beautiful Sonoran desert area of southern Arizona has long been a preferred destination for travelers and retirees who desire a warm comfortable climate along with ample recreational activities. In particular, the vibrant Tucson metro area offers a delightful mixture of culture, arts, and recreation. For wine lovers, a rewarding adventure lies just a short one hour drive from metro Tucson – the heart of Arizona Wine Country.

Our first visit to Arizona Wine Country was a short and enjoyable day trip. Going east/southeast from Tucson on I-10, it’s only an hour away. Exit I-10 about 20 miles east of the city at Exit 281 and proceed south about 25 miles on Arizona Rt. 83. Note the changing topography as you climb more than 2000 feet through your journey.

Traveling south on Rt. 83, you’ll soon enter the charming town of Sonoita, the gateway to wine country. Looking at the terrain in the Sonoita area, you’ll begin to understand why wine has been produced here for many years. It’s a perfect blend of medium elevation, rich soil, and low humidity. Owners of the seven wineries in this area will tell you this area is just about perfect for growing grapes.

Southern Arizona Wine Country’s Seven Wineries

Let’s spend a little time at each of this area’s seven wineries. As is typical with a wine trail journey, these wineries are clustered together within a few miles. We recommend a late morning stop at one or two, a break for lunch, and then more wine exploring on into the afternoon.

We visited these wineries over the course of two visits, so feel free to mix and match your destinations. There’s no precribed order, as the wineries are scattered about in this pleasant, mostly rural area. No matter which you choose, you’re guaranteed a true taste of Arizona’s highly respected wine industry.

Callaghan Vineyards: Callaghan Vineyards produces premium reds and whites from its own 25 acre vineyard. Styled in Mediterranean and Spanish varieties, owner Kent Callaghan’s wines have received accolades from prominent publications like Wine Spectator and the New York Times, and have been served at the White House on three occasions. Our favorite was Lisa’s White, with its spicy apple aroma and subtle rich taste of pear and grapfruit.

Canelo Hills Vineyard and Winery: Canelo Hills is the product of owners Tim and Joan Mueller, who founded the operation in 2003. The Muellers were delighted to open their new tasting room in September 2007, realizing a long term dream to own and operate their own winery. Current wine offerings include a chardonnay, syrah, cabernet sauvignon, and an especially delicious crisp riesling.

Dos Cabezas Wineworks: Dos Cabezas is a relatively new arrival to the Sonoita-Elgin wine country, but not a newcomer to the Arizona wine scene. They’ve been producing wines since 1995, and recently moved the winery to this area from a location in the southeastern part of the state. Dos Cabezas was very proud to win two Governers Choice Awards in Dec. 2007 for Arizona’s best red and white wine.

Rancho Rossa Vineyards: Rancho Rossa is one of Arizona’s largest family owned wineries, producing over 1200 cases per year entirely from their own fruit. Enjoy a taste of their Case Cuvee, a rich Chardonnay blend, as well as their Grenache, a red that’s fermented in French Oak.

Village of Elgin Winery: Village of Elgin Winery is one of the area’s original wineries. Established here more than a quarter century ago, Village of Elgin is well known for hosting two annual wine festivals, taking place in April and September. Offering a full and unique selection of reds and whites, Village of Elgin’s wines will please any wine lover’s palate.

Kief Joshua Vineyards: Kief-Joshua is another newcomer to the wine scene here and is located in the cluster of wineries known as “Winery Row”, very close to many of the wineries listed above. Views from the tasting room are spectacular, overlooking scenic grasslands with mountains in the distance.

Sonoita Vineyards: Our last stop on this Wine Trail adventure is Sonoita Vineyards, the largest winery in this area and open since 1983. Their Arizona Sunset fruity rose wine was the first Arizona wine we tried many years ago. For a change of pace, try their Sonora Rossa. It’s a spicy light red wine that’s best served slightly chilled, perfect with Italian food.

If you’d like to spend a bit more time in the area, consider an overnight stay at one of the area’s many lodging options, including authentic Old West guest houses. Or, explore the nearby historic towns of Tombstone and Bisbee. No matter your choice, a journey to Arizona Wine Country is a perfect long weekend destination you’ll savor for years to come!
